Fast, convenient charging at home
Why a charging station

7 to 22 kW: up to 3 times faster than a 3.7 kW dedicated socket.

Schedule charging at night or on a dynamic tariff, badge access. Reimbursement with Voltaback.

Ideal if you drive a lot or charge several vehicles.
Want to install a charging station (wallbox) at home or in a co-owned building in Luxembourg? Here is what matters: which power to choose, what it costs, the installation rules, the grants planned for 2026, and how to get reimbursed if it is a company car.
Which power to choose: 7, 11 or 22 kW?
A 7.4 kW single-phase charger is enough for the vast majority of households: it charges most vehicles overnight. 11 or 22 kW on three-phase is useful for high-mileage drivers or several vehicles, but be careful: your car often limits the power it accepts on alternating current (many top out at 7 or 11 kW).
How much does an installed charger cost?
Budget around €1,000 to €2,500 installed, depending on the power, the brand and the complexity of the works (indicative prices).
Item | Indicative price |
|---|---|
7.4 kW charger (single-phase) | €500 to €900 |
11 or 22 kW charger (three-phase) | €900 to €1,500 |
Installation by an approved electrician | €400 to €800 |
Total installed | €1,000 to €2,500 |
Installation: approved electrician and grid request
Have the charger installed by an approved electrician (list from the Fédération du Génie Technique): they lay a dedicated, protected circuit, handle the earthing and guarantee a compliant installation. For a charger of 7 kW or more on three-phase, or more than 4.6 kW on single-phase, a request must be submitted to the grid operator (Creos in most municipalities) before installation, via the myCreos portal. After the works, the electrician reports completion via the SmartyPro app.
Connected charger: smart control, load management, reference power
Most chargers can be controlled from an app: scheduling charging at night or at the cheapest hours, tracking consumption, badge access. Since 2025, the grid tariff depends on a reference power assigned by Creos: a 7 to 11 kW charger can exceed it and trigger a surcharge on the kWh concerned. Dynamic load management and power limitation avoid this extra cost and tripped breakers.
Charging station or dedicated socket: which to choose?
It all depends on how you use it:
Dedicated socket (CEE 16 A) | Charging station (wallbox) | |
|---|---|---|
Power | 3.7 kW | 7 to 22 kW |
Range added per hour | 20 to 40 km | 40 to 110 km |
Installation | Approved electrician recommended | Approved electrician, grid request |
Installed price | ≈ €400 to €700 | €1,000 to €2,500 |
Ideal for | Daily use | High-mileage drivers, fleets, co-owned buildings |
Not sure which to choose? Take the test to find the right solution for you. And if you drive little, a dedicated socket is often enough and much cheaper.
Installing a charger in a co-owned building
In Luxembourg, there is no automatic right to a charging point: you need a vote at the co-owners' general meeting. For an individual charger installed at your own cost and affecting the common parts, an absolute majority (the majority of all the votes in the co-ownership) is enough. A collective infrastructure paid for by the co-ownership, or a power increase for the building, requires a double majority. An unreasonable refusal can be challenged in court.
Two approaches: an individual installation (your charger, your circuit) or a collective infrastructure with smart load management for the whole car park. The Klima-Agence practical sheet sets out the majorities and the steps. Collective installations must be inspected by an approved body.
What grants are available in 2026?
- Private charger grant (draft): draft bill no. 8577 provides for a grant of 50 % of the costs excluding VAT, capped according to the type of charger (for example €1,200 for a smart charger in a single-family house), for invoices issued from 1 January 2026. This bill has not been voted yet: keep your invoices.
- Co-owned buildings (draft): the same bill provides for a grant per smart charger in a residential building and 50 % of a collective load management system, up to €40,000 per building.
- Procedure: the conditions and the application are explained on guichet.lu.
- VAT: 17 % on the charger and installation, 8 % on electricity.
Pay less: night tariff, dynamic tariff and reference power
In Luxembourg, there is no regulated off-peak tariff. Some suppliers offer a night tariff (for example a window from midnight to 6 am, around 25 to 30 % cheaper) or a dynamic tariff that follows the wholesale price hour by hour and requires a Smarty meter. Schedule charging from the charger's app in these time slots, and limit the power to stay below your reference power. Well managed, charging at home costs much less than at a public charging station.
How do you get reimbursed for charging a company car?
If you charge a company car at home, the electricity comes out of your pocket. The right reimbursement method is real cost, at the price of your electricity contract (night tariff, dynamic tariff…), in Luxembourg or in your country of residence if you are a cross-border worker, rather than a flat rate that would become taxable salary. That is what Voltaback does: 100 % software, no hardware to install, a record per vehicle and automatic reimbursement accurate to the cent. See how it works for drivers or across a company fleet.
FAQ
Your questions about charging stations
A 7.4 kW charger (single-phase) is enough for most households and charges most vehicles overnight. 11 or 22 kW (three-phase) is only worthwhile for high-mileage drivers or several vehicles.
Rarely. On alternating current, most vehicles only accept 7 to 11 kW. A 22 kW charger only speeds up charging if your car AND your three-phase installation allow it. Check your model's AC charging power before oversizing.
Yes. 11 and 22 kW require a three-phase connection, and a request to the grid operator before installation. On single-phase, the charger is limited to 7.4 kW, which is plenty for daily use.
Yes, use an approved electrician: it guarantees a safe, compliant installation and is a condition for grants. For a charger of 7 kW or more on three-phase, or more than 4.6 kW on single-phase, a prior request to the grid operator (Creos in most municipalities) is mandatory.
Budget around €1,000 to €2,500 installed, depending on the power, the brand and the complexity of the installation.
On a 7.4 kW charger, around 6 to 8 hours for an average battery (50 kWh), i.e. one night. At 11 kW, it is almost twice as fast if your car accepts it.
Yes, with a vote at the general meeting: an absolute majority is enough for an individual charger installed at your own cost. A collective infrastructure paid for by the co-ownership requires a double majority. The Klima-Agence practical sheet sets out the procedure.
Often, yes. Dynamic load management and power limitation temporarily reduce charging when your home is consuming, which prevents tripping and limits the surcharge billed above your reference power.
Yes, a wallbox can be removed and reinstalled. Have an electrician remove and refit it safely.
Draft bill no. 8577 provides for a grant of 50 % of the costs excluding VAT for private chargers and co-owned buildings, retroactive to 2026 invoices, but it has not been voted yet. Follow its progress on guichet.lu and keep your invoices.
