Is fitting a chargepoint at every employee's home really a good idea?
On paper, giving every employee a wallbox seems logical. In practice, it is a project per employee, with just as many obstacles:
- Cost: around £800 to £1,500 of hardware and installation per home, multiplied by your fleet.
- Lead times: quotes, surveys, DNO notification, works. Weeks, sometimes months before everyone is equipped.
- Flats: freeholder or managing agent consent, car park capacity, survey. Roll-out stalls as soon as an employee lives in a block of flats.
- Renters: an employee who rents cannot have a wallbox fitted without the landlord's written permission.
- Maintenance: one wallbox per home means a whole estate to maintain, repair and replace.
- Diversity of homes: house, flat, on-street parking, wallbox already in place. A new chargepoint is not always useful.
- Staff turnover: an employee moves house or leaves the company, and the wallbox you paid for becomes a headache.
The real question is not which chargepoint to install, but how to reimburse charging fairly, whatever the employee's setup.
The alternative: reimburse the charging, not the hardware
Voltaback is a 100 % software solution. Your employees charge on the setup they already have (3-pin plug, dedicated socket or wallbox), and you reimburse them at the real cost of the electricity used, or at the HMRC Advisory Electricity Rate per mile. Nothing to install, nothing to maintain. In 3 steps:
- The employee connects their vehicle in a few minutes in the app, all makes, no hardware.
- They upload an electricity bill to record their real tariff (Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus, Agile, Economy 7…).
- The record is generated automatically every month: energy measured, tariff applied, amount to reimburse. No data entry at all.
You equip your whole fleet in a few days, without a single installation project.

FAQ
Your questions about equipping employees
No, and that is the whole point of Voltaback. Your employees charge on their existing setup (3-pin plug, dedicated socket or wallbox) and you reimburse the electricity actually used. No hardware to roll out or maintain.
Voltaback measures the energy from the vehicle's data and the employee's electricity tariff (uploaded via a bill). No need for a connected wallbox or a telematics box: the calculation is done in software.
Yes: for company cars, HMRC publishes an Advisory Electricity Rate of 7p per business mile for home charging (15p for public charging, reviewed quarterly), paid tax-free. The alternative is to reimburse the real cost of all the electricity, private miles included, also with no tax or NIC. Voltaback handles both, because it measures business miles, charging location and energy per vehicle.
Yes, in every case. The solution does not depend on any particular installation: without a smart meter, in a flat, on a shared car park or in rented housing, as soon as the employee charges at home, the charging is measured and reimbursed.
A few days. Bulk import of employees and automated reimbursements avoid the home-by-home project of a wallbox roll-out.
Every charging session is linked to an identified vehicle and measured: it is impossible to get reimbursed for charging that is not your own. The monthly record per vehicle is ready to show HMRC if asked.
